The goal was marred by controversy after Funes Morey appeared offside when his teammate's pass, but the ball hit Caceres put the striker in a privileged position to keep the referee on his decision after reviewing the video assistant referee (VAR).

The end of the match witnessed exciting minutes after Club America hit the crossbar before a lengthy review of "VAR" for the possibility of handball in the area against Monterrey.

However, the referee did not award a penalty kick to the opponent so that Monterrey won his fifth title, adding it to the years 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2019, depriving America of an eighth title to enhance his record.

Thus, Monterrey qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup, hosted by Abu Dhabi.
